International Roma Day, celebrated on 8 April, is an opportunity to celebrate Roma culture, history, identity, and the many contributions of Roma communities across Europe and beyond.

It is also a day to reflect on the importance of equality, inclusion, respect, and equal access to opportunities. While Roma communities have a rich cultural heritage and a long history across Europe, barriers to education, employment, and social participation continue to affect many Roma people.

International Roma Day therefore provides an opportunity not only to celebrate, but also to raise awareness of the importance of creating societies in which everyone has the opportunity to learn, develop their skills, and actively participate in their communities.

Education as a pathway to opportunity

Education plays an important role in creating these opportunities. Access to quality education and lifelong learning can help people develop new skills, increase their confidence, improve their employment prospects, and become more actively involved in society.

This is one of the key ideas behind the EDURom project – Education for Social Inclusion of Roma.

Through EDURom, project partners are working to strengthen educational opportunities for adult members of Roma communities, with a particular focus on digital skills, soft skills, lifelong learning, and pathways towards employment and greater social participation.

The project also aims to better understand the educational needs of Roma adults. By listening to their experiences, interests, motivations, and the barriers they face, EDURom seeks to support the development of learning opportunities that respond to real needs.

Learning, inclusion and stronger communities

Education is not only about acquiring knowledge. It can open doors to new opportunities, strengthen independence, support personal development, and help people participate more fully in their communities.

That is why EDURom sees education as an important part of building more inclusive societies. By creating accessible learning opportunities and strengthening the skills of Roma adults, the project contributes to a future in which education can become a pathway to greater participation and opportunity.
